City workers were shocked and grief-stricken Wednesday when a co-worker went to the Lewis Street Park after his lunch break and committed suicide.
At about 1 p.m., a citizen at the park heard a sharp report and saw what appeared to be a suicide attempt.
Emergency workers arrived to find a man, 53, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“It has been a horrendous week for us,” said Deb Willis of the Monroe Police Department. “Why this happened, I don’t know if we will ever know.”
