Monroe residents Takeko Hose, Suzi Allender and Mona Damron didn’t know one another until one of their grandchildren mentioned that there were other Asian families in the valley and they got acquainted.
Last Tuesday they demonstrated the art of making veggie sushi at the ECSC as part of the Boomerang program, a series of classes and events designed to attract younger seniors that takes place each Tuesday evening.
The three women brought a colorful display of fillings that went beyond the raw fish many associate with sushi.
Takeko mentioned that although fish sushi is delightful, she and her family enjoy making the Japanese dish with fresh, barely-steamed vegetables such as carrots wrapped in seaweed.
