By handwritten notes, this photo shows Mrs. Maggie Daly and son, Robert. The photo is dated 1905 and is identified as Monroe’s first telephone exchange. It also identified the location as the 212 East Main Street Building, which still stands.
Phone service began in Monroe in the summer of 1899 by Sunset Telephone and Telegraph Company of California. The history of early phone service is complex. If this photo was taken in 1905, it would not be the first exchange and the photo might not have been taken in the 212 East Main Street Building at all.
