The Sultan Food Bank has been offered an entire cow as a donation, but needs support from the community before they can accept the generous gift.
Food handling regulations state that food banks can only distribute meat that is packaged to specific guidelines. The cost for having the cow prepared to the allowable specifications is $250.
As of Sept. 6, the food bank had received $50 towards the fund. The $200 balance will need to be obtained within approximately one week. Donations can be dropped off at the Sultan Food Bank or the Volunteers of America office, located at 703 1st St. in Sultan. Checks should be made out to the Sultan Food Bank, with a note specifying “cow fund.”
One cow would yield roughly 500 pounds of meat for Sky Valley families in need.
“It’s a huge donation,” said Kelly Clifton, Director of Sky Valley Community Outreach. “We want to take advantage of it.”
