A water main break that closed two schools Tuesday morning was due to a long crack in a section of cast iron pipe, said Jakeh Roberts, director of Monroe Public Works.
At about 4:30 Tuesday morning, Public Works got a report of the break near the intersection of Ingram and Brown Road. Water was flooding the immediate area, and did flood the basement of at least one home.
Crews turned off water to the area, interrupting service for about 75 homes and two schools, including Chain Lake and Salem Woods elementary schools, and parents arriving with students were greeted with signs informing them of the closure.
Public Works workers dug up the pipe, found that a length of the cast iron pipe had cracked along the bottom, cut that piece out and replaced it.
