On October 5, the East County Senior Center hosted the first of a now-annual fundraising event called High Tea. Traditional English teas, scones and finger sandwiches were prepared by the volunteer staff to bring a bit of merry Olde England to the Colonies.
Singing group the Village Voices performed a 20-minute program of favorites from the ’30s, ’40s, and some wonderful numbers from the ’20s such as “Old Soft Shoe.” The standing room only crowd joined in on several numbers during the afternoon soirée, then got to their feet to give the group several standing ovations.
Fashions were typical of the dress code for high tea; noted among the attendees were big hats, scarves and handbags. Models showed off some of the ensembles available for sale at Monroe’s consignment store Grow With Me, located between the Safeway and Ben Franklin stores.
Sky Performing Arts Lory Tossey wrote to say that the outfit she modeled was a steal at $50 for the whole ensemble.
The event was such a rousing success that another High Tea is in the planning stages for Valentine’s Day.
