A power outage that affected about 1,000 Monroe customers Tuesday was caused by a failed power pole, said Neil Neroutsos, spokesperson for the Snohomish County PUD.
Tuesday, Dec. 31, a pole fell down at 14100 Fryelands Blvd., near the YMCA. The pole was connected to two circuits. The grid is configured in such a way that the failure affected about 1,000 customers.
Pole failure is quite uncommon, Neroutsos said. That pole failed, not because of dry rot as the PUD had initially suspected, but because beauty bark around the base had corroded the guy wire that helped hold it up.
Of about 115,000 poles in the district, about one percent are replaced annually, said Neroutsos.
“We replace about 1,300 poles a year,” he said.
