The Stevens Pass community suffered a tragic loss on Monday, Feb. 17, when an off-duty Stevens Pass employee died in a snowboarding accident in Corona Bowl, which is in the Mill Valley area of the resort.
The employee has been identified as 32 year-old Kenneth Kelley. He has worked at the resort for five seasons dating back to 2002 and was currently working in the Stevens Pass Rental Tech Center.
The accident was first reported to Stevens Pass Pro Patrol at approximately 10:30 a.m. When Patrol arrived on scene, it appeared Kelley had hit a large rock and suffered traumatic injuries. According to reports, Kelley was snowboarding alone in an area of the resort designated as “experts only” terrain. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Kelley was transported by Stevens Pass Pro Patrol to the Nordic Center where they were met by King County Fire Department District 50. He was pronounced dead at approximately 12:01 p.m. en route to the hospital.
“The entire Stevens Pass community is devastated by the loss of Ken Kelley and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as we all absorb this tragic news,” said Bill Bourton, Stevens Pass General Manager.
