Monroe Public Schools invites parents and guardians to learn more at Kindergarten Information Night on Tuesday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at each neighborhood elementary school. Families with children ready to start kindergarten in September, 2014 are encouraged to attend.
These informational meetings will be hosted by each school’s principal and include discussion of curriculum as well as the registration process. Kindergarten registrations will be accepted during the March 4 event and on the school days following from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. at each neighborhood elementary school. If unsure which school serves your area, families may visit the schools’ website at www.monroe.wednet.edu or call the public schools’ Transportation Office at (360) 804-2652.
Families have many options for kindergarten. Classroom space and enrollment determine which options are available at each elementary school. It is important to register early and encourage others to register early as decisions about options occur by early April. Options without adequate interest are canceled. In addition, some schools may fill their classrooms early, forcing students who register later to be bused to another elementary school.
The standard program has students attending a full day of instruction (8:50 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.) on alternating days – Mondays and Wednesdays each week with some Fridays, while other students will attend Tuesdays and Thursdays with some Fridays.
Families also have other choices. The half-day, every day (mornings OR afternoons Monday – Friday) model will be offered as an option for families willing to provide mid-day transportation. Families may also choose an option for Extended Kindergarten (8:50 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Monday – Friday) where families pay tuition for the additional instruction. Families qualifying for the federal free or reduced price meal program may take advantage of discounted tuition.
Frank Wagner Elementary offers an extended-day program for all kindergarten students with funding from the federal government. In addition, Frank Wagner Elementary also offers a dual language program. Any kindergarten student may enroll and students will be placed on a first come, first served basis. School bus service is only provided to families living in the Frank Wagner transportation area.
Maltby Elementary School hosts a Montessori program that is also open for kindergarten students on all day, every day schedule with families paying tuition for the additional instruction.
State law requires incoming Kindergarten students to have received current immunizations by the first day of class and be age 5 by August 31, 2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year. The child’s certified birth certificate is required.
