It’s time to brush up on your favorite dance moves and practice your air-guitar techniques. Sultan’s 26th Annual Lip Sync competition is less than a week away.
The family-friendly lip sync competition will take place in the commons area of Sultan High School on Friday, May 16. The competition begins at 7 p.m., but performers should plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. to sign up. Admission to the event is $3 for adults and $2 for students under 18 years of age.
Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Debbie Copple said that contestants of all ages are encouraged to participate.
“We’ve got people from four years old to 85,” said Copple. “It’s truly a community function just meant for silly fun.”
Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Johnson will emcee the event. Johnson grew up participating in lip sync performances with his brothers. They would put on shows for friends and family, basically anyone who would sit still long enough to serve as an audience.
“When we found out that there were actually lip sync contests, we were excited. Turns out all that practicing paid off as we won the first two Sultan Lip Sync contests we performed in,” said Johnson. “Last year my 9-year-old son joined us, so it’s definitely a family affair!”
“The Lip Sync is a wonderful, fun, friendly family event,” continued Johnson. “The acts are creative, amusing and entertaining.”
Age categories include elementary school, middle school, high school and adults. Every group is judged based on their oldest member with first through fourth place prizes available for each age group. All music must be family-oriented and appropriate for attendees of all ages. Participants must live in the Sultan School District boundaries.
Potential contestants should plan on bringing their choice of music via a CD or thumb drive, complete with mp3 audio files. Songs should not exceed five minutes in length. The tech department has requested no iPods.
