Payton Anderson signed a letter of intent this spring to compete next year with the University of Georgia women’s equestrian team. Not only will she be attending the University of Georgia on an athletic scholarship but will also have an academic scholarship in the fall.
This year Anderson, age 18, attended Monroe High School and also the Running Start Program at Cascadia Community College. She has earned 70 college credits and was a regular member of the Dean’s List.
At the age of nine years old, she began national competition on the top quarter horse circuit. Mike and May Edwards of Monroe have coached and trained Payton. “The support of my family and trainers made all the difference,” she said. “Their confidence in me really pushed me to be the best I can be.”
Throughout her equestrian career, Payton has been the state champion showman four times. She is a member of the Washington State Quarter Horse Youth Association and was named the champion of the youth trail and a semi-finalist in youth horsemanship at the 2013 American Youth Quarter Horse World Championship Show.
