Senate doubles money for U.S. Highway 2

Fred Walser thought he'd gotten all the good news he would get from the state congress this year.

The chairman of the U.S. 2 Safety Coalition hadn't expected the road to get much funding this year, as the congress was just halfway through a two-year budget and was only writing a supplementary budget, fine-tuning the planned outlay.

Sultan residents go to polls,
decide to keep library


Supporters of the Sultan Library were relieved when residents Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to tax themselves rather than give up the town library.

"The Friends of the Library are in great relief and so happy with the community. It's another example of how this community comes together," said library director Jackie Personeus.

Monroe is a city rich in parks, and soon even the resident pooches will have one of their own.

Parks organizers have identified a piece
of unused Monroe park land that they
believe will make a suitable area for
dogs to play off leash.

It's name? Wiggly Field.

The park has been in the concept mode for
a long time, said Monroe Parks Director
Mike Ferrell.

"The whole concept of planning
and development of an off-leash
park had been on people's minds
for more than two years,"
he said.

As race car drivers go, Lex Johnson, 33, came to it somewhat late. He didn't start racing until he was 21 and an older brother got him involved.

But once he started, he moved fast.

Only four years later, he opened Concept Racing, a racing supply store. And two weeks ago, he bought the International Productions, Inc., the company that manages Evergreen Speedway, from Mickey Beadle, whose family has owned it for 30 years.
