  A new law aimed at keeping Monroe residents safer from dangerous dogs while keeping dogs safer from irresponsible owners is slated to go into effect this week, following a signature from the mayor.

The new law is less forgiving of dogs that bite or menace, and creates a somewhat more stringent standard for dogs in public. “This is a one strike law,” said city attorney Phil Olbrechts last week.

Lean year brings surprise funding
for U.S. 2, Highway 522


What started out as a dismal year for roads around the Sky Valley may end as a windfall year, thanks to help from the state and federal governments.
In December, Governor Christine Gregoire’s proposed budget took funding away from State Route 522 and did little for U.S. 2.

But the state legislature and the federal government have reversed those trends, restoring planned funding for SR 522 and pouring millions in new funding into the troubled U.S. 2.

Monroe wins big in prison water dispute

Monroe’s budget woes will be eased by several hundred thousand dollars this year, following the city’s victory in a long-standing dispute with the prison over utility fees and taxes.

Monroe Mayor Donetta Walser credits two state representatives, Kirk Pearson (R-Monroe) and Hans Dunshee (D-Snohomish), with helping to achieve the agreement with the Department of Corrections.
