Pawn shop burglars get hefty sentences

Three men convicted in federal court in connection with a burglary of guns from a Monroe pawn shop Christmas Eve of 2006 received stiff sentences from a judge Thursday, April 24.

Monroe Montessori students create children's book with the help of a local author

They can barely spell their names yet, but they are already published authors. And the students of the Monroe Montessori Preschool have already sold one copy of their book.

That book, “Squirrel Goes to School,” is the fundraising brainchild of a Montessori parent, and is the story of a squirrel that sneaks into school one day, whereupon each of the children gives him a lesson in what they have learned.

Sex offender ordered to live under bridge

A Level 3 sex offender who cut off his tracking bracelet and fled after being ordered to live under a bridge by community supervision officers was not the first to be given such an order, officials said last week. In fact, housing has become so difficult to find for such offenders that nearly half are released homeless.

For the first time, legislation creating a new wilderness area near Index has passed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Last Tuesday a wide-ranging package of bills addressing land use issues such as National Heritage areas went before the House of Representatives after passing through the senate.
