Wild Sky a Done Deal -- Wilderness bill headed for President's desk

by POLLY KEARY, STAFF WRITER

For the first time, legislation creating a new wilderness area near Index has passed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Last Tuesday a wide-ranging package of bills addressing land use issues such as National Heritage areas went before the House of Representatives after passing through the senate.

Included in the package was the legislation creating Wild Sky Wilderness, a piece of forest land of about 106,000 acres, much of it at a lower elevation than most other wilderness areas.

The bill creating Wild Sky had already passed in the House of Representatives as an individual bill, and passed in the sentate as part of the larger land use bill.

When the House of Representatives passed the larger land use bill, the bill for the first time headed for the president’s desk.

He has said that he will sign it, creating the first new wilderness area in 20 years.
