Monroe lip sync contest outgrowing its space

Only four years old, Monroe’s annual Lip Sync Contest, a fundraiser for high school scholarships, is outgrowing its space. “We sold out at the Monroe Performing Arts Center,” said Kathy Cooley, one of the five women who organize the event. “There were well over 300 people there. We had them sitting on the floor and lining the walls.” Next year, the organization, Monroe Lipsync, may move into Frank Wagner Auditorium. Read Story

Sultan school to add camera to discourage bullying, violence

When a fight broke out between two students outside Sultan Middle School, the only thing everyone could agree on afterward was that one kid had broken ribs. Assigning blame was another matter.
Although there were witnesses, including a parent, their accounts differed so much it was impossible to figure out what really happened, said superintendent Dan Chaplik. “You almost have to be right on top of it to see it,” he said.

The Evergreen Fair is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and the entertainment is bound to make a lot of fairgoers nostalgic. Attendees will hear bands like Creedence Clearwater Revisited and Weird Al Yankovich play hits from decades ago.

But the fair also features the best of the new, with Christian Contemporary act Jars of Clay and country star Gary Allen. The fair will put a smile on many faces with the comic act of Bill Engvall. Monroe Police Department reviewed, declared at top of game


Monroe Police Department personnel are proud this week, as Wednesday a state organization that recognizes excellence in police work awarded the department their highest honor. The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC), after a lengthy and rigorous review process, formaly gave the department state accreditation, certifying that Monroe’s force is operating at the highest standard of professionalism. Former Monroe High student makes movie for Madonna

Everyone who grew up in the Class of 1990 grew up with Madonna, from “Like a Virgin” to Desperately Seeking Susan, through the bracelets and latex and media frenzy. One guy from Monroe’s Class of 1990 actually went to work for her, recently becoming a celebrity himself as the director of her just-released documentary “I am Because We are.” Read Story
