A house fire on Tester Road two weeks ago that resulted in the death of a baby has community members gathering household goods and clothes for the two families who lost their home, and some wondering how to get fire safety messages to Spanish- speaking people. Read story

Monroe mayor announces candidacy

Monroe Mayor Donnetta Walser will seek a third term in office in order to continue working on transportation issues and the North Kelsey shopping center, among other things, she announced last week.

Formerly a city council member, the retired teacher won the office of mayor in 1999 and took office in 2000. In that time, she has presided over major events in the city, including mushrooming growth, a long-running negotiation with the prison over fees and taxes, increasing traffic, planned development of a major shopping center, and most recently a serious economic downturn that led to job and budget cuts in the city.

Federal funds may help unsnarl two Monroe intersections

The intersection of U.S. 2 and Main Street, long a thorn in the paw of traffic engineers in Monroe, has failed to get funding for needed overhauls several times from tax packages and levies that failed or fell through. But this time, thanks to efforts to get federal money, the funding appears likely to come.

In spite of a failed levy last year and a bleak state budget, Monroe city officials have high hopes this summer that at least two intersections that badly need help will get it this year. And that help is likely to come from the federal government. One project is likely to be funded, not in spite of, but because of, the economic downturn. Read story

 
Monroe check cashing business robbed


Saturday, Monroe police officers were dispatched to a holdup alarm at about 10 a.m. at the “Check into Cash” business in the 19000 block of Lenton Place S.E. in Monroe.

Upon arrival, the officers found a lone female employee who had been tied up in the store. Two suspects who had displayed a handgun fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Read story
