Man’s arrest leads Feds to look into training range

Clad in a dapper gray suit with a blue tie, a clean-cut Andrew Steven Gray, 32, of Monroe, sat in before a judge in a federal courtroom in Seattle Thursday and heard the penalties he could pay if convicted of the charges he faces.

For being a felon in possession of a handgun, he could get 10 years. For owning a machine gun, another 10. For owning an unregistered silencer, 10 more. And the 300 marijuana plants police found when they searched his home could net him 40 years in a federal prison. Read story

Childhood obesity rising; local agencies treat families rather than just kids
A quarter of everyone living in Monroe is obese. A third of everyone living in rural Snohomish County is obese. Those are the results of a study completed by the county and released in January. And more kids than ever are becoming seriously overweight, according to another county study. Now, county health workers, community health leaders and others are working to educate families about what can be done to fight obesity, most particularly in children. Read story

Proposed pay hike for chief, deputy chief, trouble some
The mayor of Monroe is proposing a major pay hike for two officials who have taken on extra work during the recession, and some city employees are displeased. Mayor Donnetta Walser proposed June 2 that Monroe police chief Tim Quenzer get a pay hike of $4,000 per month. That is because he took over as city administrator in January, temporarily replacing for former city administrator Jim Southworth, who was terminated that month. Since then, Quenzer has been serving both as chief of police and city administrator. Read story
