City gears up for fireworks

As July 4 approaches, many residents of Monroe will once again be torn on the issue of fireworks. Some support family and friend firework traditions, while others are concerned about the problems fireworks cause, including safety, fearful pets, leftover debris and fire hazards.

Monroe business owners share their ideas and hopes for the city's downtown

There are 148 businesses in the blocks comprising Monroe’s downtown, including a broad spectrum of goods and services, from spas to antiques to restaurants both upscale and casual to car repair to Mexican meat and baked goods shops.

A few of the owners of those businesses shared their ideas for the downtown last week.

A theme would be nice for the downtown, said Janice Botting of Complete Elegance Salon and Spa on Main Street, which for about seven years has provided massage, facials and hair styling to Monroe.
