Speed, failure to yield may have been factors in fatal motorcycle collision
Speed may have been a factor in a Tualco Valley collision between a motorcycle and a car last week that killed two people and left a third badly wounded.
Monday, June 30, at about 7:33 p.m., Myka Brianne Campbell, 17, of Everett, was turning onto SR 203 off of Tualco Road in an older model Pontiac Grand Am when a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Thomas Walter Devine, 44, of Newcastle struck the driver’s side.
Witnesses said that Campbell nosed onto 203, appeared to hesitate, then moved forward again, into the path of the motorcycle.
“Multiple witnesses said the bike was traveling at a high rate of speed,” said trooper Keith Leary of the Washington State Patrol.
The motorcycle struck the car with enough force to flip the car over.
Devine died at the scene.
Campbell was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she died.
Her passenger, Eleazar Cabrera-Ramos, 18, was also taken to Harborview, where he was listed in serious condition.
State Route 203 was completely blocked by the crash. Traffic began to move around the accident on the shoulder late that evening.
Speed and failure to yield may be factors in the collision, police said.
Cases such as this one are difficult for police, said Leary.
“I’ve been in law enforcement a long time and it’s the first time I’ve seen a car flipped by a motorcycle,” he said. “These things affect you, especially when young people are involved.”
