Fair celebrates a century, parade draws a crowd
By POLLY KEARY, EDITOR
It was a particularly eventful late August day Saturday, as Monroe not only celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Evergreen State Fair (which began life as the Cavalcade of the Valleys a century ago) but hosted the biggest crowd at the Monroe Fair Days Parade that participants can remember.
Nearly 100 entries paraded down Main Street during the hour-and-a-half long event, including the Monroe High School Bearcats Football Team, coming straight from practice, and the marching band.
The Grand Marshall’s Award for the parade went to the 175-member Cascade High School Marching Band, who proceeded down Main Street playing “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper.
