Fair sets centenarian record

It’s unofficial, but staff at the Evergreen State Fair have announced they have surpassed the current record of 23 centenarians to gather in one location. On Monday, Aug. 25, centenarians numbering 24 were guests at the fairgrounds in an attempt to break the Guinness record.

The potential new record was created with people like the eldest, Georgia Geiger, who was born Feb. 22, 1901, and the youngest, Mildread Nelson, who was born July 2, 1908.

When the time, noon, scheduled for all centenarians to be present and counted came and went, 22 guests lunched and shared their stories. At 12:20 p.m., the record-tying 23rd 100-year-old arrived, with the record breaker two minutes behind.

The previous world record of 23 centenarians was set in 2006 at a tea party in Northern Ireland.

The official record will be determined by Guinness and will be made within eight weeks from receipt, fair officials said.
