Child reports abduction attempt in Startup

POLLY KEARY, Editor

  Suspect
POLICE ARE SEEKING INFORMATION about a caucasian man, about 5’ 9”, of medium build, perhaps in his mid-20s, who a 10-year-old Startup girl reported chased her as she waited for a bus. A police artist completed this composite sketch of the man, based on the girl’s description.
.

A 10-year-old school girl in Startup was waiting for the bus Thursday, Sept. 30, when she had a terrifying experience. A man stepped out of a truck and ran toward her, she said. She turned and fled for a neighbor’s house a short distance away. The man pursued briefly, then ran away, she said.

The girl went home and told her father what had happened. He stepped out of the house and looked for the suspect, and reported to police that he saw a man he didn’t recognize get into a faded green truck, possibly a 1970s or 1980s model, and drive away.

The father called 911. Deputies searched the rural area, but didn’t find anyone fitting that description.

The child didn’t see a vehicle, but did give police a description of the man. She said he was a white male, about 5’9”, bald, and possibly in his mid-20s. She said he was of medium build and that he was wearing ripped blue jeans and a dark blue T-shirt.

The man the father saw get into the green truck was also bald, or balding, and may have had hair around his ears. It’s not clear if the man getting into the truck was the same man who scared the girl.

A police sketch artist, working with the girl, completed a sketch of the man based on her description.

There are no other similar reports in the area. Police are continuing to seek information. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s tip line at (425) 388-3845.
