This is a year for the record books. The snow that began as a few flakes Wednesday afternoon turned into a series of snowstorms and high winds that dumped about two feet of snow in the Monroe area, caused eight-foot drifts in Sultan and when paired with high winds knocked power out to about 1,600. to Iraq

Although there is a
lot of tension between
Iraqis and Americans
in Iraq, in one remote
province, they get
along pretty well. In
fact, in the rural and
poor Diyala province
of Iraq, women clad in floor length burqas beamed at camouflage clad soldiers in the weeks after Thanksgiving.
For their children, who love soccer but can't usually afford the equipment to play soccer, were given gifts of soccer balls and candy by those soldiers. Read story

Heavy snow lent the perfect touch to the holiday decorations at houses like this one in the Fryelands (below). Throughout Monroe, houses were in full holiday regalia, often with the recent additions of a snowman or two.
