Monroe’s City Council decided to censure one of its members last Tuesday, although the week before they voted not to adopt ethics board findings that he had committed violations of the city’s ethics code.

“While the ethics process has run its course, we as a council do have the options at any time to give discipline at any time and I believe that’s something we should do,” said council member Kurt Goering, one of two council members who the week prior had voted not to adopt the ethics board’s findings.

The ethics board found that Stima had violated a narrowly written ethics ordinance that prohibits city officials from engaging in city matters that could potentially financially benefit themselves or their family members..

Fred Walser, former chief of the Sultan Police, has announced that he will seek the state senate representing the 39th legislative district.
Walser will run for senate
Former Sultan Police Chief Fred Walser announced Friday that he would seek a state senate seat this fall.

“It’s time people out there had better representation and better visibility from their representative than they’ve had in the past,” said Walser, 67. “I was encouraged to run by some of my peers in law enforcement because of their frustrations with the current admisnistration and because of my work on Highway 2.”

The Sultan Economic Development Board photo contest started out as a way to get people to shop in Sultan; the top four winners each received “Sultan Bucks” or gift certificates good at participating Sultan stores.

“It started as a way to get locals spending locally,” said real estate agency owner Bart Dalmasso.

But the contest, which will run quarterly, takes on a new importance in the city this quarter.

The city is adding an economic development page to the website and needs good scenic photos of the town and surrounding area.
